ManyofthepostsherearesofilledwithdiatribesandinaccuraciesthatIhadtolaugh!OnepostercomplainedthattheFlyingTigersactuallywereonlyflighttrainersfortheChineseAirForce,andonlylostthreepilotsincombat.AtleasttwocomplainedthatJohnWaynewasadraftdodger.OnestatedthattheTigerswereincombattwoyearsbeforePearlHarbor.OnestatedthattheJapanesewereunfairlytreatedasbadguysinthefilm.OnedeclaredthattheFlyingTigerswereupagainstasuperiorplaneintheJapaneseZero....
Firstoff,theFlyingTigersstartedtraininginSeptemberof'41andweredisbandedinJulyof'42.Inthatroughlytenmonthperiodtheyshotdown286CONFIRMEDkillsforthelossof12FlyingTigers.Theywerenot"ChineseAirForceflightinstructors!"Theirkill-to-lossratioremainsoneofthefinestinaviationcombathistory.Secondly,theTigersneverencounteredtheZeroinCombat.TheirfoeswereprimarilyJ.A.A.F.pilots,andtheZerowasaNavyplane.Third,theJapaneseindeedDIDSHOOTATPILOTSinparachutesandinliferafts,wheneverpossible,becausetheyweretaughtthattheenemymustbekilledatallcosts,lesthesurvivetofightyouanotherday.Fourth,theJapanesecommittedthemostUNSPEAKABLEhorrorsagainsttheChinesepeopleduringWWII,asthebook,"TheRapeofNanking"cantestifyto.Fifth,JohnWaynewasNOTadraftdodger.Hehadabumearduetoaninfectionwhichrenderedhimphysically4-F.Sixth,theoutdoorsequencesof"TheFlyingTigers"werenotfilmedinNorthridge,California,butratherinthehighdesertareaaroundSantaFe,NewMexico,inthe(successful)attempttogivethefoliageamore"foreign"look.
Astothefilmitself,IwouldsuggestyougototheFighterMuseuminPhoenix,AZ,ortheAirForceMuseuminDayton,OH,andfindoutjusthowclosethefilmwastoreality.TheTigersWEREusuallyoutnumberedabout8to1incombat.The3squadronsoftheTigersDIDUSEoutdoorfacilitiesasshowninthefilm.TheTigerswereindeedmercenaries,paidbythekill,aswellasbythemonth.TheTigersWEREfrequentlyshortofsparesandfuel.TheTigersDIDhavenicknames,like"Tex"(DavidLeeHill)and"Pappy"(GregoryBoyington).TheTigersDIDhaveafewbeautifulnursesonstation.(Infactoneofthem,JaneFoster,endedupmarryingaTiger,whowassubsequentlyshotdownandkilledaweekbeforetheyweretoleavefortheStates.)Truthfully,theonlyrealovertfictioninthefilmisthepre-PearlHarborcombat,asinfact,theTigersdidnotstartcombatoperationuntilafterPearlHarbor,(beingintrainingpriortothat.)Whyisthefilmsoaccurate?Becausetwoguyswhoweren'tabletocutitasTigersdecidedtotakethestoryoftheTigerstoHollywoodtosellit.Theywerethe"technicaladvisers"forRepublic,whichwasabletogleanmuchabouttheunitfromthem.
