SamShepardplaysIrishprisonescapeeJoBroncoBullfrog.HidingoutinaseamysectionofLondon'sEastEnd,Bullfrogbefriendsagangofteenagers.Lookingforkicks,thekidsteamupwithBullfrog,buthisnotionofexcitementprovestoomuchforthem.Somegoodscenes,backedbyexcellentlocationphotography,donotmitigatesomeofthemorefoolishaspectsofthestoryline.Completedin1970,BroncoBullfrogwaswithheldfromgeneralreleasefornearlytwoyears.
SetintheEastEndofLondonatthetailendofthe60s;BRONCOBULLFROGisthestoryofayoungcouplewhodecidetorunawaywhentheirparentsdisapproveoftheirgrowingloveforeachother.TheydecidetoholeupwithJoe'BroncoBullfrog'whoisinhidingaftergoingontherunfromBorstal.Allthreerealisethoughthatthelawwillcatchupwiththemsoon.
BroncoBullfrogisthefirstfilmMikeLeighshouldhavemade.ItissetintheEastEndandwasfilmedinsixweeksinandaroundStratford.UsingyoungactorsfromJoanLittlewood'sactingworkshop,muchofthefilmisimprovisedfromthescriptthusgivingthefilmanauthenticitylackinginmostotherhomegrownefforts(see"Quadrophenia").
