“GazaStrip”pushestheviewerheadlongintothetumultoftheIsraeli-occupiedGaza,examiningthelivesandviewsofordinaryPalestinians.Thedocumentaryoftenseestheworldthroughtheeyesofyoungpeople.ThecentralcharacterisMohammedHejazi,a13-year-oldpaperboyinGazaCity,oneoftheyoung“stone-throwers”whorisktheirlivesthrowingrocksatIsraelitanksacrossthebarbwirefences.AsthenewspapersarriveannouncingArielSharon’svictoryintheIsraelielections,MohammedoffersuptiradesagainstArafatandSharonalike.Wealsocatchglimpsesofhisinnerworld:hissenseofhopelessness,hissorrowattheIDFkillingofhisbestfriend,hisconceptionofdeath.AsthecamerafloatsthroughtheGazaStrip,weencountersignsoftheoccupationeverywhere:crowdsofPalestiniansaremakingtheirwayalongthebeachonfoot,donkeycartsandtractortrailerswhentheIsraelisoldiersclosetheroads.ThePalestiniansinterviewedastheypassbyrevealacommoninternalconflict,betweenangerattheIsraelioccupationandthedesiretoliveinpeace.IntheKhanYounisrefugeecamp,“GazaStrip”documentsanextremelycontroversialincidentinFebruary,whichfelllargelythroughthecracksofinternationalscrutiny,whentheIsraeliDefenseForcesusedanunidentified,powerfulgasduringafirefight,hospitalizingover200Palestinianswithsevererecurrentconvulsions.InsideaRedCrosstentnearanIsraelicheckpoint,aPalestinianmotheranddaughterdebatethepoliticsoftheirsituation.Asnightfallsontheircamp,themotherdescribeshowIsraelisoldierscamewithbulldozers,leveledtheirhomeanddestroyedalloftheirbelongings.Theeyeofthefilmisusuallypassiveandwatchful,sometimesalmostinvisible,eveninthemostintimatesettings.WhenaPalestinianchildisblownupinRafah,weseetheentireprocessofhisinternment,frommorguetomosquetograve,unblinkingly.ThecameramovesslowlyoveraPalestinianneighborhoodbeingstrafedbyIsraelimachine-gunfire,schoolchildrenscattering.“GazaStrip”culminatesinanighttimeraidinApril,whenIsraelibulldozersstormedintotheKhanYounisrefugeecampunderthecoveroftankandhelicopterfire,anddestroyedthehomesof450Palestinians–thefirstofmanysucharmedincursionsinto“AreaA”bytheIDF.--©LittleRedButton
