Ralliaisreturningtoherbirthplace,hopingtofindhermother,Keltoum.Sheslowlyfindsherwaytoahousetowhichthebusdriverhaddirectedher.Shemeetsaweatheredoldmanwhoshelearnsishergrandfather(BrahimBenSalah).HewarmlywelcomesherandtellsherthathermotherworksfarawayinaluxuryresortinElKantara,buteachFridayKeltoumreturnshome.Ralliaalsomeetsheraunt,Nedjma(BayaBelal),awomanwhoisdisturbedandappearsderanged,withstutteringspeechandjerkymovements.Waitingforhermothertoreturn,Ralliatriestoparticipateinthefamily'sdailylife,andencountersthehardshipsofthedesert.Thetrekforwellwaterisrelentlessandoftenoverwhelmingespeciallywiththethreatofadroughtalwayslooming.
AfterwaitingforacoupleofweeksforKeltoumtoreturnhome,RalliasetsoffwithheraunttoElKantaratofindher.DuringtheirjourneytheymeetanassortmentofmenandwomenwhorevealeverydayrealitiesofAlgeria.Theirfirstencounteriswithawoman(FatimaBenSaudane)whohasjustbeenrejectedbyherhusbandandisbeingsentaway.RalliaandNedjmainvitehertotravelwiththem.Thatnight,whenrevolutionariesburstintotheirhostel,thewomanrecognizesthemasherson'sfriendsandspeakstothem.Tragicallythemenkillhertokeepherfromtellinganyonethatshesawthem.RalliaandNedjma,inshockandanger,continueontheirjourney.
