Itcertainlytouchesonsomecomplexaspectsofthesituationinthefilm,notleastofwhichisthenear-primitiverejectionofa'woundedanimal'bytheherd(inthiscaseagroupofneworexpectantmothers.)AndRadhaMitchelldoesanexcellent,nuancedjobofportrayingtheshiftingemotionsandfragilityofthemaincharacter.JustinLouis-lookinganawfullotlikeAidanQuinnandportrayingasimilartypeofcharacter(amiable,sensitive,manly)-isalsoquiteaffectingasthehusbandstrugglinghelplesslytomakethingsbetterwhenalmostanymovehemakesisdoomedtobewrong.
Theothercharacters,too,arewell-castandwell-acted.Andthephotographyisjustmoodyenoughtohavetexturewithoutbeingdistractingly'pretty'.
So,whatkeptthisfrombeingapowerfulandultimatelysatisfyingfilm(forme)?
Firstofall,thepacing,whichwasreminiscentofmanyFrenchorSwedishfilms.Lotsoflingeringdomesticvignettes,almostdocumentarylike,settingupwhothesepeopleare,theirrelationship,theirworld.IttakesaLONGtimetogettothecentralcrisisofthefilm.Andonceitoccurs,there'slotsmorelingeringdomesticscenes.
Allofthisisjustifiableinafilmthatfocusesontheemotionaleffectsofoneincident.Butitassumes-ratherthancompels-acertaincomplicityonthepartoftheviewer.
Morefundamentallythough,thefactthatthemaincharacterseemspre-ordainedforSOMEkindofcatastrophemakesherbigreversalseemmoreinevitablethanshocking.Itdoesn'thelpthatshe'sportrayedasdeeplyanxiousfromthestart.SomuchsothatattimesthisfeelslikeanearlyPolanskifilm,preparingusforsomethingreallyawful.So,whentheworsedoesoccur,ratherthanbeingshocked,we'realmostrelieved.
Addtothisthecuriouschoicetogivetheprotagonistamonstrouslyremotemotherandwhatwouldbesurprisingherewouldbeforhertoeverexperienceunshadowedhappiness.Sheseemsattheleastfragile,ifnotquietlybutfundamentallydisturbedfromthestart.Theresultisthatsomeofhermoreexcentricbehaviorlaterseemstoflownotfromthetragedybutsimplyfromwhatweknowofhercharacter.
Sincenoneofhergirlfriendsreactwithcommondecency,nevermindnobility,abouttheonlytrulylikeablecharacterwemeetisthehusband,sothatit'sfarhardertobeintimatelyaffectedbythecentraleventshere.Becauseitsimplyseemsthateveniftheyhadneveroccured,thiswouldneverreallyhavebeenaveryhappyworld.
