Oneofthemostintriguingaspectsofgaymalesexuality--andtheoneexploredhere--istheabsenceand/orreplacementoftheiconicdominant-submissiverelationshipourculturehasgottensousedto.Combatoffersacoupleofinterestingobservationsonthesubject:masochismisinstilledearlyhomosexualdevelopment(asenseofinferiorityandfearisstampedontheleadcharacterfromage14whenheisbeatenupbyacouplekids&toldbyhismotherthatheshouldhavefoughtback),andthatpainelevatedtoaformofsexualarousalsimultaneouslyservesasasourceofindulgenceandpenitence(whiletheyhavereplacedgenitalarousalwithbodilydamage&seemtoenjoyit,theyoungercharacterassertsattheend:"Ifeelgoodwithyou.Imean,notguilty."It'ssimultaneouslyastatementaboutloveconqueringadeep-seededhomosexualguiltcomplexandaconfessionthatthisviolence,whichhisloverreferstoas"punishment,"isasoul-cleansingact.)
